READING TO KIDS REMEMBERS HELGA HUNG
Twenty years ago, on her way home from the January reading clubs, longtime volunteer Helga Hung passed away in a car accident. A mere 31 years old at the time, Helga was an elementary school teacher in Pasadena with a passion for volunteerism that was infectious.
A 38x volunteer with Reading to Kids, she was a shining star, brightening up Esperanza Elementary School with her presence. Helga chaired committees, served as a Grade Level Coordinator, and helped to build and sustain Reading to Kids during the 5 1/2 years she volunteered with us.
Upon Helga's passing, those of us who knew her pledged to continue this program in her memory. On the home page of our website, as an everlasting tribute to her, there is a yellow shooting star containing the initials "HH." If you click on that star (or this link: https://readingtokids.org/Tribute/HelgaHung.html), you can learn more about Helga and read tributes to her from some of her Reading to Kids friends.
As we wrote in 2006, "Helga, although you may no longer be with us in body, you will always be with us in spirit, and your memory will enable us to continue to make sure that our Saturday mornings are smiley and sunny, just as you liked them."
