Reading to Kids News
October 18, 2018

Dear Friends of Reading to Kids,

Despite a rainy morning, this month, 718 kids braved a rainy LA morning along with 453 volunteers, 125 parents, and 30 teachers & staff to make our October 13th reading clubs a success!

Two of our Site Coordinators, Linda Antonioli at White and Heather Horn at Politi, also welcomed volunteers and kids as an astronaut and witch, respectively! Click the image below for a larger version.

We would especially like to thank the eight wonderfully entertaining magicians (most from the Westside Wizards) who made the reading clubs so special this month!

Crosswords LA

Want to help Reading to Kids an additional Sunday this month?

Crosswords LA is holding a crossword puzzle tournament this Sunday, October 21st, with proceeds benefiting Reading to Kids!

This year the tournament will be held on the University of Southern California campus in the Hoffman Hall basement (see their directions page for details) – and Crosswords LA needs 3 more volunteers to help!

This tournament raises money for Reading to Kids, so if you can volunteer with them for either the full day or a half day, please email us today at info@readingtokids.org. Full day volunteers (8:30am – 4:45pm) get a free lunch!

Our volunteers will set up portions of the event, greet and sign in contestants, and collect puzzle papers. It's a lot of fun volunteering with them!

Please be sure to sign up for the next reading clubs!   Click here to submit your RSVP for our "The Wonders of Science & Technology" reading clubs on November 10th.

We expect a lot of new volunteers in November, so please sign up early! Then help spread the word by also joining our November 10th Facebook Event.

College Items Wanted!

November is our college spirit month, so dig out your college sweatshirts and ball caps to wear that morning! We also give out college swag to all of the kids - pens, pencils, stickers, etc. - anything with a college logo.

If you work at or have a connection with a college, please help us by asking for a donation of items with that college's insignia. If you like, you can click this link for a request letter/email you can send. Great sources of items with your college's logo are the athletic department and the bookstore!

To "sponsor" one grade at one school, we need about 40 of one item. To sponsor all of one grade at all 8 schools, then we need about 300 of one item. And anything in between would be very helpful!

Reading to Kids t-shirt front     Reading to Kids t-shirt back

It's time once again to get your very own Reading to Kids t-shirt!

We have a group order ending Sunday, October 28th, so please head over to our Order a T-Shirt link for all the details on how you can order your own shirt like the one shown above.

That Order a T-Shirt link is also available in the lower left-hand side of our website. The more t-shirts ordered by the 10/28 deadline, the less expensive they will be!

Reading to Kids Annual Fund Drive

We extend a huge thank you to everyone who helped us kick off our 2018 Annual Fund Drive, including 121 volunteers this past Saturday who together donated $4,936!

The names of the new donors have already been added to our 2018 Annual Fund Drive page, and here are the school competition stats so far:

Highest percentage of volunteers who donated at the Oct. 13th reading clubs:
1st: Alta Loma with 36%!
2nd: Gratts (only 1% behind Alta Loma!)
3rd: Magnolia (only 1% behind Gratts!)

Highest dollar amount raised at the Oct. 13th reading clubs:
1st: Esperanza
2nd: Politi
3rd: Magnolia

Our overall goal by the end of the year is to raise $55,000 from 550 donors.

Here's how you can help, with your donations being counted towards the school competition:

1) Make a pledge to donate by check or donate online today by visiting our 2018 Annual Fund Drive. Contributions of any amount are greatly appreciated!

2) Show your support by asking friends and family to contribute! Visit our 2018 Annual Fund Drive page and look under the "Help us Fundraise!" header for resources, including information on creating your own personalized fundraising page on Facebook, our handy donor sheet for raising money with your friends and co-workers, tips for fundraising, and so much more.

Once they know about Reading to Kids, many of your friends and family will want to donate - we just need you to ask!

Also, if your workplace matches donations to nonprofits, please share with them your donation, and ask them to consider matching it. In this way you double your donation and share with others your enthusiasm for Reading to Kids!
