TENTH STREET CHALLENGE

Reading to Kids is hoping to expand to a sixth school in February 2007, but we need your help this month to put us in a position to do so!

Historically, we have only expanded when we have demonstrated a capacity to recruit enough volunteers. In fact, the original reason we expanded from Gratts to Esperanza in March 2000 is that we had too many volunteers for just one school! Last month, we fell just short of filling up at five schools (all the reading clubs went on, but we could have used just a few more volunteers to reduce the group sizes). This month, with less than one week to go before the reading clubs, we are still 115 volunteers away from our goal.

The next elementary school in line for expansion, Tenth Street Elementary, is eager and ready for us to expand in February, but we can only do so if we have enough volunteers to ensure that we are able to expand without diminishing the quality of our program at our current schools.

The challenge is to fill up our January 13th reading clubs by Friday, which means changing all those bars next to each school (on the home page under "Current Needs") to 100%.

Please RSVP if you can make it to the reading clubs this month! In addition, if you have friends who may be interested in volunteering, please encourage them to sign up as well! Click here for a sample e-mail to send out to friends.

If we are able to fill up the January reading clubs by Friday, we will feel confident in our ability to expand in February. If not, we will challenge ourselves again in February to be ready for a March expansion. But we're confident that with your help (by volunteering and/or encouraging your friends to volunteer), we'll hit our target this month, and we'll be reading to those kids at Tenth Street in February!

BECOME A READING TO KIDS "FRIEND AND SUPPORTER"

Would your co-workers love to join you at the reading clubs? Is your campus group looking for a fun volunteer opportunity? Does your alumni organization need an event to attend together? If the answer is yes, it is time to sign them up for Reading to Kids!

Reading to Kids Volunteer Groups recruit volunteers for the reading clubs. In addition to a fantastic volunteer experience, groups who regularly recruit and bring volunteers are thanked on our website as "Friends & Supporters." For examples, check out Clark Construction, Westside Cal Alumni Club, and UCLA Bruincorps.

INTERN WITH READING TO KIDS!

Reading to Kids has spring (and summer) internship opportunities! We are looking for college students to intern at our West Los Angeles office.

Learn the ins and outs of running a small non-profit and enjoy a relaxed and fun work environment by interning with us! Interns support reading club and office operations in addition to taking on individual, long-term projects. Projects include but are not limited to: grant-writing, volunteer recruitment and coordination, event coordination, promotional material design, community and school relations, classroom help, and reading club operations. Projects are given based on an intern's skills and interests.

If you are interested in a career in the non-profit field, are looking for a great hands-on internship experience, or just want to help out, this is the internship for you!

Click here for more information, and e-mail Jessica.Tritsch@readingtokids.org to apply.

SAMPLE RECRUITMENT E-MAIL

Join Reading to Kids on January 13th for a morning of reading, crafts, and inspiration!

Reading to Kids’ mission is to inspire underserved children with a love of reading. On the second Saturday of each month, Reading to Kids conducts reading clubs at five Los Angeles area elementary schools. At the reading clubs, volunteers receive training and breakfast on-site, then pairs of volunteers are matched with 4 to 8 children and spend about an hour and a half reading aloud to the kids and working on a craft project. Volunteers are in by 9 and out by 12!

This is a fun and easy way to help out in the community! Please sign up for this opportunity on our website at www.readingtokids.org. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact Reading to Kids at (310) 479-7455.
