We need lots of volunteers again this month, as we're anticipating another busy Saturday with hundreds of kids!
Great "School" Selections!
While many of us think of September as "back to school" time, this July 1st is the first day of school for the children in Reading to Kids' participating schools: they're year-round! As such, July 10th marks the first Reading Club of the new 2004-2005 school year, and our participants deserve a warm welcome!
In keeping with the excitement of the new school year, Reading to Kids' July book selections are on the theme of "Schools." From childhood favorite The Day Jimmy's Boa Ate the Wash (which describes a crazy school outing to a farm, complete with egg wars), to a beautiful photo essay by Nobel Prize Winner Toni Morrison called Remember: The Journey to School Integration, it's a great book month, indeed!
The "Picture Walk"
It's essential to stimulate interest in the book you're reading aloud to Reading Club participants, and a Picture Walk before the reading time is a great way to do just that. You'll flip page-by-page through the book you're about to read, asking the kids to interpret what is going on in the story just by looking at the pictures.
Not only does the picture walk allow you to open up a dialogue about the book, it also aids children's comprehension of vocabulary and story elements by giving them visual reference points. For a complete list of tips to help you in making the most of your read-aloud time, please click here!
Thanks, and have a great week!
