Dear Friends of Reading to Kids,
Happy Juneteenth to you all!
"I love Reading to Kids! Reading to Kids is fun, with crafting stuff and books, and painting is super fun. I made a Father's Day card for my dad, and we did bracelets. I like being with people who do fun things!"
Sebastian, Esperanza 1st grader this past Saturday
We all knew last Saturday would be a very challenging morning for the families we serve. Our volunteers' dedication to fulfilling our promise to support the kids that Saturday will have a positive impact on a more hopeful future.
Last Saturday at six schools we had 35 kids, 145 volunteers,
four parents, and 16 teachers & staff
join us for a few hours of joyful literacy and creativity at our June 14th reading clubs!

(Based on rumored activity near their campuses, MacArthur Park Elem. and Tenth St. Elem. determined it was best to cancel their reading clubs that Saturday morning. We take comfort that the families knew we were there to support them.)
After hearing El Perro con Sombrero: A Bilingual Doggy Tale, Kindergartners at Politi made paper bag puppet dogs wearing sombreros!

Some of the kids created Father's Day cards, such as the below from 1st grader Sebastion at Esperanza, who we quoted above!

JOIN US FOR OUR BEACH DAY ON SUNDAY, JUNE 29TH, NOON - 7PM
Time for more fun in the sun! Spend any part of your Sunday afternoon at Dockweiler Beach with your fellow Reading to Kids volunteers on Sunday, June 29th, from Noon - 7pm. Let us know you are coming at our Facebook event!
The main entrance address is 12000 Vista del Mar, Los Angeles, CA 90293. We will be near Lifeguard Station #57, and our precise location on the beach will be posted that day to our Facebook page at facebook.com/readingtokids and on our X (formerly Twitter) at x.com/readingtokids )
We'll be soaking up the last bit of summer with sun, sand, plenty of refreshments, and games! Just look for the large blue canopy tent!
Please feel free to bring:
- Refreshments (and any food/beverage supplies you'll need)
- Towels
- Sunscreen! (don’t forget!)
- Anything else to enjoy the day! (See below for exceptions)
There’s a great bike path that runs through Dockweiler up through Marina Del Rey, all the way to the Palisades. Dogs are NOT allowed on the beach, but they are allowed in the parking lots and along the bike path, as long as they are on leash.
The large beach parking lots charge $13 on weekends, although you may be able to find limited street parking in the vicinity. That day we’ll be posting a GPS pinpoint to help find us on our Facebook page and on Twitter, and you can just look for the tent, too.
We must follow the beach rules:
NO Animals
NO Cooking
NO Diving
|
NO Loud Music
NO Glass containers
NO Solicitation, sales, or advertising
|
NO Alcohol

See you there!

half of our funding from corporate and foundation
grants? For example, over the last five years alone
seven of our volunteers helped us receive $142,000 in
grants from their employers!
Please check to see if your employer offers grants
that Reading to Kids can apply to and let us know at
