The July theme is "Independence and Growing Up." Thanks to Charles White Elementary staff for helping to pick out our July books! Take a peek at what you will be reading on Saturday:
*Kindergarteners will help Peter learn how to whistle for his dog Willie in Ezra Jack Keat's Whistle For Willie.
*Second graders will follow Ana through her journey growing up with an older sister in Growing Up With Tamales by Gwendolyn Zepeda and Gabriela Ventura.
*Fourth graders will hear a story about a young Spanish-speaking boy's struggles to find motivation in school. The readers will discover how the boy can conquer his fear of language barriers and cultural differences in Francisco Jimenez's La Mariposa.

Read to Kids this Saturday!
Help inspire kids with a love of reading this Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon!
Reading to Kids organizes monthly reading clubs on the second Saturday of every month at eight downtown Los Angeles elementary schools. Pairs of volunteer readers read aloud to small groups of students from the elementary school (typically between 4 and 6 children per group) in a fun environment. Volunteers also help the children create craft projects related to the books. Teachers from the elementary school provide training, supervision and guidance throughout the morning. At the end of the reading clubs, Reading to Kids gives each child a book to take home and donates the read aloud books to the school's library.
Our next reading clubs will be held on July 12, 2008. To sign up, please visit www.readingtokids.org to register and RSVP. For more information, please feel free to e-mail info@readingtokids.org or call (310) 479-7455.
