Dear Friends of Reading to Kids,
Today marks the 8 year anniversary of the first reading clubs at Gratts Elementary (8 volunteers and 20 kids on May 8, 1999). Eight years later, our May 2007 reading clubs will involve 6 schools, over 300 volunteers, and over 800 kids!
Reading to Kids has grown over the years due to the dedication of people like you. People who are interested in inspiring kids to read. People who are willing to volunteer their time to give back to the community. Even people who just subscribe to our e-mail updates to get the latest news about Reading to Kids.
At Reading to Kids, we have worked hard to make the reading club experience as rewarding as it can be for everyone involved:
For the kids, we read them teacher-selected books, provide them with activities and books to read while they wait for the reading clubs to begin, and give them brand new paperback books to take home and add to their libraries.
For the parents, each month, we work with the teachers at the schools to put on training sessions involving literacy, community resources, or other topics of interest to the parents.
For the volunteers, we aim each month to provide them with an efficient, streamlined experience that values and respects the time they spend with us on a Saturday morning.
For the teachers and administrators, we bring to their campuses dedicated volunteers who are there to build off of the work they do during the week.
For our friends and supporters, we work hard to maintain an organization of which they can be proud.
Come join us at El Cholo after the May reading clubs for appetizers to celebrate the 8 year anniversary of our first reading clubs!

L.A. WORKS DAY 2007!
Reading to Kids is organizing a team of volunteers for L.A. Works Day and we would love to see you there!
Join us on June 2nd for L.A. Works Day 2007 for a rewarding day of community service. Thousands of people will congregate at Cal Plaza downtown before heading out to volunteer sites all over the city. We are working with the L.A. Works staff to arrange for a special project for the Reading to Kids team in memory of our long-time volunteer (also an L.A. Works volunteer and elementary school teacher) Helga Hung.
The Reading to Kids team will do projects at a local school - interactive activities with the kids, painting, landscaping, etc. Your effort will be rewarded afterward with great food and live music. The entire family is welcome!
Date: June 2, 2007 Time: 7:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Place: California Plaza 350 S. Grand Ave, L.A. 90071
Click here to sign up. If you are not already an L.A. Works volunteer, you will need to complete a quick registration form. After logging in, click on the "Join a public team" button then select "Reading to Kids." Note that the $25 registration fee has been waived for Reading to Kids volunteers. You may contact our team captain Mark May at Mark.May@readingtokids.org with questions.
