Weekly News Update
April 27, 2007

Dear Friends of Reading to Kids,

Reading to Kids will be joining thousands of community members, hundreds of organizations, and scores of authors at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books this weekend!

We still need people at our Festival of Books booth to help recruit volunteers and answer questions about Reading to Kids!  If you would like to join us at the booth, contact Jessica.Tritsch@readingtokids.org today to sign up!  Click here to see available shifts.

The Festival of Books is America's largest book festival and takes place once a year on the UCLA campus.  The event is free and open to the public on Saturday, April 29th from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on Sunday, April 30th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Reading to Kids will be at Booth 140 (across from Kaufman Hall; click here to see an event map).

If you are at the event, stop by and visit us -- we'll have a team of great volunteers sharing the news about Reading to Kids!

SIGN UP FOR MAY "FAMILY AND CULTURE" READING CLUBS

Sign up today for the May 12th "Family and Culture" Reading Clubs.  Click here to sign up now!

Make sure to check out this month's book selections along with the craft ideas and discussion topics developed by our hardworking Curriculum Committee. Click here to take a look!

Some of the craft ideas, like those for Indian Paintbrush by Tomie dePaola, include a "bring ahead option."  One of the craft suggestions is to cut a shape that looks like an animal skin and draw a picture in the style of the book.  This craft could be done using construction paper or brown grocery bags that you could bring from home.  As always, you are welcome to develop your own craft ideas as well!

SECOND ANNUAL MBA MASTERS GOLF CLASSIC

Proceeds Benefit Reading to Kids

The 2nd annual Southern California MBA Masters Golf Classic will be held on June 2, 2007 at the Lost Canyons Golf Course.  Thanks to Esperanza volunteer and golf tournament co-coordinator Clara Chun, co-coordinator Ted Cordova, and the event's leadership team, proceeds from the tournament will benefit Reading to Kids!

Volunteers Welcome to Play

Reading to Kids volunteers are welcome to join MBA alumni from all over Southern California and their guests for the golf tournament.  Fun prizes for holes-in-one, closest-to-the-pin, long-drive contest and a raffle will give everyone a chance at going away a winner. Of course, one business school alumni association will be crowned "Champion!"  Last year's winner was Harvard Business School.

Not a golfer?  You are invited to join us for food and drinks at the end of the round.  Register for the cocktail party and dinner starting at 5pm for only $35.

In addition, Reading to Kids will be looking for volunteers to help out with fundraising before and during the event.  Contact Jessica.Tritsch@readingtokids.org if you are interested in helping out.
