HELGA HUNG REMEMBERED

It was one year ago from last Sunday that Reading to Kids lost our dear friend Helga Hung, who died in a car accident on her way home from the reading clubs. This past Saturday, we remembered Helga by having a moment of silence in her honor at all of our schools.

On our website, we have an enduring tribute to Helga, which you can get to by clicking on the shooting star on our home page. Helga's family has also put together a beautiful site that celebrates Helga's memory (http://www.helgahung.com). Helga was a joy, and although we miss her still, we remember her fondly. She continues to be an inspiration for all we do at Reading to Kids.

TENTH STREET UPDATE

What a great response from our volunteers to our Tenth Street Challenge! To demonstrate that we had the ability to expand, we challenged our volunteers to help us fill up our reading clubs, and we ended up doing that, with 303 people volunteering with us this month. Based on this response we are ready, from the volunteer end, to expand.

However, this month we had a dip in our kids numbers at the schools. We went from a record 1301 in December (always a good month because of Santa) to only 597 kids this month.

So, we are going to postpone our expansion to Tenth Street by one month so we can work with the schools to focus on student recruitment. There is a Taskforce committee (School Relations) that is made up of volunteers and school administrators who work on issues like student recruitment. If you are interested in helping us recruit more kids to attend the reading clubs, please contact us to learn more.

The reading clubs are a collaborative effort with the schools, and before we expand again, we want to make sure that we're doing things right at our existing schools.
