The September Reading Clubs Were a Hit!

On September 10th, we welcomed 674 children and 214 volunteers for a morning of "Fantasy, Folklore, and Fairy Tales." Thanks to all of the volunteers who worked so hard to make this a successful morning, in particular our wonderful Site Coordinators, who work tirelessly to ensure the Reading Clubs are fun and well-organized!

The October Reading Clubs -- with their popular "Halloween" theme -- are sure to fill up fast! Make sure to reserve your spot and click here to volunteer on October 8th!

Annual Fund Drive Off to a Successful Start:
You Make It Happen!

The September reading clubs kicked off the 2005 Annual Fund Drive, and we've already received a number of individual donations and pledges from our super volunteers and supporters!

We understand that this year's fundraiser comes on the heels of a national tragedy, and while many of you are making donations to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina, we urge you not to forget those right here in Los Angeles who need your assistance --  the kids you read to every month.

As volunteers and supporters, all of you are a huge part of an important cause.  Reading to Kids could not operate without its volunteers.  Since the organization was founded in 1999, more than 4,200 volunteers have donated their Saturday mornings to the Reading Clubs, contributing an incredible 35,616 volunteer hours reading to kids.  During those hours, you have given the kids 32,883 prize books to take home and supplied their school libraries with 5,256 hardcover books.  Not only have you donated your time and enthusiasm to Reading to Kids, but you?ve helped out financially as well.

Last year, our volunteers helped to bring in over $20,000 during the fund drive.  This year, our goal is to raise $25,000 from 350 donors.

We're not asking for huge donations -- just what you want to give and can afford.  Any amount helps!

$10       Purchases up to 6 prize books

$25       Purchases up to 15 prize books

$50       Purchases up to 4 library bound, read-aloud chapter books to be donated to the school library

$75       Purchases a set of 6 hardcover, read-aloud books to be donated to the school library

The theme of this year's fund drive is "You Make It Happen." And you do!  You are the ones who come each month, read to the kids, and help them learn to love reading.

By making a donation, or by asking friends or family members to make a donation, you will help Reading to Kids remain a vital presence in these kids? lives.  Your volunteer time is critical, and so is your financial support.  Both ensure that Reading to Kids will continue the important work of which we are all a part.
