Weekly News Update
July 6, 2004

Welcome back from the weekend, everyone!

While the barbecues and fireworks are over for the moment, you can fire up your patriotic spirit again this week by volunteering at the July 10th Reading Clubs! We're only a few days away from the "back to school" Reading Clubs, and we need your volunteerism to make sure the clubs are a success!

Please submit your RSVP today by clicking here to sign up.

What could be more American than flexing your civic muscle and getting involved in the education of the next generation of Californians?

Discussion Topics!

Reading to Kids' participants tend to be a curious bunch, always asking questions about the book you're reading together. If you need help sparking fruitful discussion in your group, though, be sure to check out discussion topics for each month by clicking here and more general discussion topics here!

Our hardworking Curriculum Committee meets each month to read the teachers' book selections and hatch great ideas for crafts and classroom discussion for use at the Reading Clubs. If you'd like to get involved in the work the Curriculum Committee is doing or help out R2K in another way, please click here to learn more about the R2K Taskforce.

Reading to Kids has just one staff member and a seasonal staff of interns; the real planning and execution of R2K's monthly and ongoing activities is pursued by the Taskforce, a group of about 50 talented volunteers who give their personal resources and time to make this organization the best grassroots cause in Southern California! If you've volunteered two or more times and you'd like to get more involved, check it out!

KidCity!

There's a great event taking place on the weekend of July 17-18 at the Rose Bowl: it's KidCity! Attended last year by over 45,000 kids and their families, this event is a "mini-metropolis" aimed at promoting learning and literacy in the community and is organized by the L.A. Times.

KidCity's organizers are seeking volunteers for the event. You can contact Larry Deckel, Volunteer Coordinator, at (213) 237-3307. Please visit the KidCity website for more information: http://www.troutco.com/kidcity.

Thanks, and have a great (four-day) week!
