Saturday Virtual Reading Club Itinerary

Before 9:00 a.m. on Saturday
 •  Volunteers download and save to their computer the PDF of their read-aloud book using the link provided in their Wednesday and Friday reminder emails.
They will be screen sharing that PDF to the kids,
so must have Adobe Acrobat or the free Adobe Reader from https://get.adobe.com/reader.
 •  Volunteers read the book ahead of time.
 •  Volunteers review the reading guide that includes questions for the kids and a simple craft the kids can do at home.
 •  Volunteers gather their own craft materials so they can lead the kids in the craft. Note: There may not be time for a craft, depending upon how the Zoom session goes.
 •  Volunteers ensure they have their own Zoom account to join the reading club. If necessary, sign up for a free, Basic account here at https://zoom.us/pricing.
IMPORTANT: You will need to use Zoom from a desktop or laptop computer. The phone and tablet versions of Zoom do not have the necessary features for our virtual reading clubs.

Optional: If you would like to use Zoom's virtual background feature, you are welcome to use any fun and appropriate virtual background image(s) you like. You are also welcome to download and use this Reading to Kids-themed virtual background. You may also want to read how to use the "mirror my video" option so any words or symbols in your virtual background don't appear backwards in your Zoom of yourself.
Saturday
9:00 a.m. - Check-in
 •  Volunteers join the Zoom Check-In session using the link provided in their Friday reminder email.
 •  The Site Coordinators check in each volunteer.
 •  In that same Zoom session volunteers are introduced to each other and given general overview of the reading clubs.
9:15 - 9:30 a.m. - Volunteer Training
 •  At 9:15 a.m. interactive Zoom training session begins, volunteers practice sharing their screens.
9:30 - 10:00 a.m. - Join Teacher Zoom Meeting
 •  At 9:30 a.m. volunteers leave the Zoom Check-In session with the Site Coordinators and join the Teacher Zoom session using the link provided in their Friday reminder email.
 •  The volunteers discuss with the teacher how to best prepare for the reading club session, asking the teacher the questions provided in their Friday reminder email.
10:00 - Reading Clubs Begin (duration TBD by the teacher)
 •  At 10 a.m. children start joining the Teacher Zoom session, and the reading clubs begin.
 •  Volunteers follow the teacher's lead, then read aloud the book to the children, screen-sharing the read-aloud book PDF.
 •  Volunteers are encouraged to ask the kids for their names (since the names on their screens may not be their own names), then write them down or rename the kid's screen name (as explained in the above Zoom training guide) so they can often address the kids by their names.
 •  Volunteers write down throughout the Zoom session the highest number of kids who participated, since some may join late or drop off early. Note also if there is more than one kid visible together in the same room, since siblings/friends/cousins etc. may also be watching alongside. Your Site Coordinators will not need the names of the kids, just highest total number of kids who participated.
 •  Teachers also note the highest number of kids who participated.
 •  Site Coordinators visit briefly in each Teacher's Zoom session to ensure everything is running smoothly and to write down the number of kids participating.
10:30 - 11:00 a.m. - Return to Site Coordinator Zoom Meeting
 •  As each Teacher Zoom session ends, volunteers re-join the Site Coordinators in the same Zoom Check-In session they used at 9 a.m., using that same link provided in their Friday reminder email.
 •  Volunteers participate in a 15-minute debriefing session once all readers have returned to the meeting.
11:30 - 12:15 p.m.
 •  Volunteers from all schools are invited to meet for a virtual "lunch" Zoom gathering using the link provided at the bottom of their Friday reminder email.
