Dear Friends of Reading to Kids,

Even though only five of our partner schools were open during the middle of summer, 76 kids, 91 volunteers, 10 parents, and 12 teachers & staff participated this month! stars icon

To us, that's proof that we've made reading a fun, social experience that children genuinely look forward to. Thank you for making our reading clubs possible each month! blue heart icon books icon

4th and 5th graders were inspired to make more elaborate crafts after enjoying chapters from Belly Up (FunJungle) and The Eyes and the Impossible. At Gratts, volunteer Paul Heinzman provided his own samples for inspiration! paint palette icon

Next week we'll share some of the crafts the younger kids made!

AUGUST 8TH
END-OF-SUMMER READING CLUBS

Please be sure to sign up for the next reading clubs!   Click here to submit your RSVP for our "Back to School Fun" clubs!

These August reading clubs will be smaller again because the schools will still be on the final weekend of their summer break, so be sure to sign up early!

We'll also be giving school supplies to the kids that morning, so see the school supplies item below for how and what to donate for the kids!

Note about August 8th volunteer spots: We are starting out this week with only 10 volunteer reader spots at each school, since we will probably combine the summer kids into K/1st, 2nd/3rd, and 4th/5th grade groups.

We hope to be able to open more spots at some schools as we determine if we can expect more kids to join us the last Saturday of their summer break.

Thus, if you find your school already filled this week, please sign up for any of our other schools, or keep checking back to see if we have opened new spots at your preferred school.

Note about MacArthur Park and White Elementary:

Those two schools are closed the weekend of August 8th, so we have closed the RSVPs for MacArthur Park and White.

For our August 8th reading clubs we encourage you to volunteer at any of Reading to Kids' other schools! For a map of all of our school sites, click here.

EXPERIENCED VOLUNTEERS ONLY:
TAKE ON A BIGGER VOLUNTEER ROLE NEXT MONTH

Volunteers at Alta Loma Elementary
Alta Loma volunteers - click on the above to see it full size.

When our reading clubs are full, they are only really full for those who want to read to the kids.

For those experienced volunteers who are open to it, we can add in your RSVP as a Volunteer Check-In Helper, Training Coordinator, a GLC, or especially being a second or third Site Coordinator or Site Operations Helper at any of our schools.

If the schools are full you might not get to read when you fill any of the above roles, but you still get to participate in creating a magical experience for the kids and volunteers that morning!

Summer is a great time to ease into any of those roles. If you can help in any of them, please e-mail us at info@readingtokids.org to help create wonderful reading clubs! stars icon stars icon

BE A READING TO KIDS AMBASSADOR
IN AUGUST!

Volunteers at Charles White Elementary

With the 2026-27 school year beginning August 12th, we will have many opportunities for you to help us promote Reading to Kids at our partner schools as a Reading to Kids Ambassador.

There are three different ways you can help: Kindergarten Orientations, Teacher Breakfast Deliveries, and Back-to-School Nights.

We'll supply everything you need, including what to say at the Kindergarten Orientations. Although it's great if you can speak Spanish (even a little), all of our parent materials are bilingual, and there's always someone who can translate for you at the school.

These events set the course for the rest of the year and are a wonderful way to interact with the kids, parents, and teachers.

If you are interested in being an Ambassador, please e-mail us at info@readingtokids.org or call (310) 479-7455.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL SUPPLIES
NEEDED FOR AUGUST 8TH

Back to School supplies

Please help us give school supplies to each kid who attends our August 8th "Back to School Fun" reading clubs!

To make that happen, we need your help purchasing from our Amazon wish list items, including blue bags for the kids to carry home their school supplies that morning!

The above wish list indicates the priority of the items we are hoping to receive from you, and it will update automatically to show only those items we still need.

Here's how it works:

  1. Order an item (or a few!) from our Amazon Wishlist at
    https://a.co/0h3CUwdv.

  2. Download and fill out our quick In-Kind Donation Form with your information and what you ordered.

  3. Email the form to us at info@readingtokids.org

  4. We'll send you a personalized thank-you letter / charitable giving receipt for your records!

(The In-Kind Donation Form helps us keep accurate donation records and provides you with documentation for tax purposes.)

The above directions are also provided at this micropage link at
https://micro.page/4a2605a2:

For those who prefer to shop back-to-school sales in physical stores, or if you happen to have the following lying around, these are the specific items we are looking for:

checkbox icon Spiral notebooks
checkbox icon Colorful 2-pocket folders
checkbox icon Colored pencil sets and marker sets
checkbox icon Pencil pouches

Please email us at info@readingtokids.org or call us at (310) 479-7455 if you have purchased for us any of the items on our wish list. Let's make the first day of school exciting for the kids!

Drag Queen Bingo!

Our next Legendary Bingo fundraiser at Hamburger Mary's in West Hollywood will be on Wednesday, October 21st. Please help us gather new prizes for auctions and bingo winners that night!

To help you get started, here is information about Reading to Kids to share with potential donors, as well as a donation form for them to complete.

We especially enjoy awarding gift certificates, amusement park and theater tickets, gift bags, and autographed items! Anything unique is great, too!

If you work at or have a connection with products or services to offer, please help us by asking for a donation to our events.
