Dear Friends of Reading to Kids,

Even though the kids were on the last weekend of their summer break, this month 188 kids, 147 volunteers, 57 parents, and 17 teachers & staff helped to make our August 9th reading clubs a success! blue heart icon

Kindergartners enjoyed hearing Mr. S: A First Day of School Book, then made adorable sandwich crafts using paper.

4th graders at MacArthur Park created their own comic books and enjoyed a word search after hearing InvestiGators: Class Action. One boy told us he has read four of the eight in the series!

And all of the kids received their school supplies in blue bags, thanks to volunteers like you!

A note about Tenth St. Elementary:

It turns out that despite our best efforts, last May was our last reading club at Tenth St. Elementary.

Because of how very unusual 2025 in Los Angeles has been so far, we were only able to hold six reading clubs there last school year. We are already looking to expand to another nearby school, and we hope to announce that school in the coming months!

BE LIKE PRINCE!

We urgently need experienced volunteers to take on more leadership with us by checking in volunteers as they arrive, helping train new and returning volunteers, being a GLC, or especially being a second or third Site Coordinator at any of our schools.

If you can help in any of those roles, please e-mail us at info@readingtokids.org to help create wonderful reading clubs!

READING TO KIDS AMBASSADORS
NEEDED TO HELP KICK OFF
THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR!

Reading to Kids volunteer at our table at a Back-to-School event

With the 2025-26 school year beginning today, we already have many opportunities for you to help us promote Reading to Kids at our partner schools as a Reading to Kids Ambassador.

There are three unique ways you can help:

  • Kindergarten Orientations
  • Back-to-School Nights
  • Classroom Walk-Throughs the week of Sept. 8th

We'll supply everything you need, including what to say at the Kindergarten Orientations or Back-to-School Nights. Although it's great if you can speak Spanish (even a little), all our parent materials are bilingual, and there's always someone who can translate for you at the school.

These events set the course for the rest of the year and are a wonderful way to interact with the kids, parents, and teachers.

If you are interested in being an Ambassador, please e-mail us at info@readingtokids.org or call (310) 479-7455.

LOOKING AHEAD: MAGICIANS NEEDED FOR OCTOBER 11TH READING CLUBS

Magician Brad Erickson performing at Gratts Elementary

At our October 11th "Halloween, Magic, & Monsters" reading clubs we also want to have magicians perform at each of our seven schools!

If you or someone you know possesses the powers of magic and illusion, please contact us at info@readingtokids.org as we are looking for more magicians!

PLEASE HELP US FIND
BINGO PRIZES

Reading to Kids' Legendary Bingo fundraiser at Hamburger Mary's in West Hollywood

Our next Legendary Bingo fundraiser at Hamburger Mary's in West Hollywood will be on October 21st! Please help us gather prizes for auctions and bingo winners that night!

To help you get started, here is information about Reading to Kids to share with potential donors, as well as a donation form for them to complete.

We especially enjoy awarding gift certificates, amusement park and theater tickets, gift bags, and autographed items! Anything unique is great, too!

If you work at or have a connection with products or services to offer, please help us by asking for a donation to our events.

You may have gift cards you haven't used which would make excellent prizes if you'd like to donate them to us! E-mail us at info@readingtokids.org to arrange mailing them to us!

HELP US FIND GRANTS!

Jessica Brown-Clark with Target grant check

Did you know Reading to Kids receives about half of our funding from corporate and foundation grants? For example, over the last five years alone seven of our volunteers helped us receive $145,000 in grants from their employers!

Please check to see if your employer offers grants that Reading to Kids can apply to and let us know at info@readingtokids.org! You may help us buy thousands of books for kids!
