Dear Friends of Reading to Kids,

We had a great time at our beach bonfire this past Saturday, and we hope more of you can join us at our other exciting events coming up over the next several weeks!

Volunteers at our beach bonfire

Our October reading clubs are traditionally our largest of the year, so we'll need your help to recruit 273 more volunteers over the next few weeks!

If you haven't already, please join our October 14th Facebook Event. It really helps us when you do because your friends can see you're attending the reading clubs. Help us spread the word by inviting them to join! After you join, don't forget to go to our website and sign up with us.

It would also be a huge help if you printed out this flyer and posted it at your work or favorite community bulletin board. Please also use our convenient email template (in PDF) to recruit volunteers! You are our super recruiters who make great reading clubs happen!

October means magicians will be performing for the kids and volunteers! If you or someone you know possesses the powers of magic and illusion, please email us at info@readingtokids.org as we are still looking for a back-up magician.

At these October reading clubs, feel free to also wear fun, school-appropriate Halloween costumes, too!

Stanford Alumni CSC members at Esperanza Elementary

Would your co-workers love to join you at the reading clubs? Is your campus group looking for a fun volunteer opportunity? Does your alumni organization need an event to attend together? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, it is time to sign them up for Reading to Kids!

Reading to Kids Volunteer Groups recruit volunteers for the reading clubs. In addition to a fantastic volunteer experience, groups who regularly recruit and bring volunteers are thanked on our website as "Friends & Supporters."

For example, we had 64 members of Junior League of Los Angeles join us on September 9th, and 19 more are already signed up for our October 14th clubs. 8 members of CSUN Sigma Alpha Zeta are also already signed up for October 14th.

If you have a connection with a business, alumni association, campus group, or other organization whose members might enjoy volunteering with Reading to Kids, start recruiting now!

To sign up your group with Reading to Kids, e-mail us at info@readingtokids.org or call (310) 479-7455, and we'll get your group started!

Crosswords LA

It's back! Crossword puzzle lovers from everywhere will be converging at the Crosswords LA tournament on Saturday, October 21 – with proceeds benefiting Reading to Kids!

This year the tournament will be held on the University of Southern California campus in the Lower Level (LL) of Fertitta Hall (JFF) (see their directions page for details) – and Crosswords LA needs our volunteers to help! They need a dozen volunteers to set up portions of the event, greet and sign in contestants, and collect puzzle papers. It's a lot of fun volunteering with them!

This tournament raises money for Reading to Kids, so if you can volunteer with them for either the full day or a half day, please email us today at info@readingtokids.org. Full day volunteers (8:30am – 4:45pm) get a free lunch! Let's show our volunteer spirit by supporting their efforts to help us!

On Wednesday, October 4th, join Reading to Kids for Legendary Bingo at Hamburger Mary's in West Hollywood!

The drinks are strong, the drag queen bingo is "R" rated, and seating is limited, so be sure to reserve your seat in advance!

Legendary Bingo is very popular and there is limited seating available. Plan to arrive before 7:00 p.m. to get a seat. We strongly suggest making a reservation (you must have a party of 4 or more) at Hamburger Mary's to ensure your seat.

All proceeds go to Reading to Kids. For more details, visit our Oct. 4th Bingo event on Facebook and invite your friends!

You can also help us gather more prizes for the bingo winners! To help you get started, here is information about Reading to Kids you can share with potential donors, as well as a donation form for them to complete.

A fantastic prize you can buy for us is a copy of Drag Queen Bingo: The Home Game! Please let us know if you are willing to buy a copy for $30 and donate it as a prize for our bingo winners!

We'd also like to have a celebrity host as a bingo caller. Please email us at info@readingtokids.org if you can personally reach out to any celebrities who would like to help your favorite good cause!

Do you know any runners? Are you a runner? Please forward this email to them and ask them to join Team Reading to Kids in next year's 2018 Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon on Sunday, March 18th!

We're looking for five more full marathon runners and two Stadium vs. The Sea Charity Challenge runners (approx. 13 mile course) to join us in one of the best marathons in the country. You can share this Facebook group with any of your runner friends to encourage them to join our team!

Runners can run either the full marathon or the Stadium vs. The Sea Charity Challenge, and the dollars raised will go to support our monthly reading clubs.

If you or a runner you know is interested in becoming one of our fundraising runners or creating a fundraising team, please email Chris Martin at marathon@readingtokids.org!

IMPORTANT NOTE: To register to run on behalf of Reading to Kids, you MUST receive from us a special web address to use when registering on the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon website.
