Dear Friends of Reading to Kids,
Thanks to the 509 kids, 215 volunteers, 114 parents, and 19
teachers and administrators who made the August Reading Clubs a
success! Although the numbers are smaller during the summer, the love and passion for reading is still just as strong and vibrant as ever!
Due to LAUSD furlough days, the first day of school will not be until after the September reading clubs.
Therefore, there will continue to be fewer volunteer spots available until October. In fact, some of the schools have already filled up with volunteers! Please sign up early to
secure a spot for the "Fantasy, Folklore, and Fairytales" Reading Clubs on September 11th.

A huge thank you to Live Talks LA and the The Pearson Foundation for hosting a wonderful evening with Carl Hiaasen on August 17th. We are honored to be the
recipient of the event's net proceeds, along with five books for every ticket sold. Carl Hiaasen and Carolyn Kellogg were simply charming and kept the entire audience in

L.A. DERBY DOLLS FREE HEALTH FAIR
The L.A. Derby Dolls will host their second annual Free Health Fair on August 21, 2010 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1910 W. Temple St. Los Angeles, CA 90026 -- less than a mile from Reading to Kids partner school Gratts Elementary!

GOOD-BYE JOBY
Sadly we say good-bye to Joby Mahto as she moves to Portland for graduate school in the Fall. She will be missed by everyone at Reading to Kids, but we wish her well in her exciting new venture. Good luck, have fun, and eat a Voodoo Doughnut for us!
