Weekly News Update
October 20 2006

Dear Friends of Reading to Kids,

On October 14th, we welcomed 586 children and 265 volunteers for our "Halloween and Magic" reading clubs.  Thanks to all of the volunteers who worked so hard to make this a successful morning, and thanks to teachers and administrators for helping to recruit your students!

Please be sure to sign up for the next reading clubs!  Click here to submit your RSVP for our College Spirit Day on November 11th!

READING TO KIDS EXPANDS TO POLITI!

Reading to Kids is excited announce that we will be hosting our first reading clubs at Politi Elementary in November!  With 5 schools this month we will need to increase our overall number of volunteers, so invite your family and friends to volunteer with you!

Additionally, we are looking for Site Coordinators, a Training Coordinator, and GLCs to start at Politi.  If you are interested in getting more involved or getting more information, please contact Sarah Kolterman at Sarah.Kolterman@readingtokids.org.

RSVP FOR COLLEGE SPIRIT DAY!

November is college football rivalry month, and in the spirit of healthy rivalries (including the big crosstown "feud" between UCLA and USC), our November reading clubs will once again feature a fun "College Spirit Day" competition.

Students and alumni are encouraged to wear their favorite school's t-shirts or sweatshirts. The school represented by the most volunteers will be crowned the grand champion of the 2006 Reading to Kids college face-off and earn bragging rights for the year. But most importantly, the kids will see the volunteers' school pride and the value of a college education.

For most of the kids who attend the reading clubs, if they go to college, they will be the first in their families to do so. According to teachers and administrators at our partner schools, kids who begin thinking about college early are more likely to end up there. Exposure to college students and college alumni is a great way to get kids thinking about their academic futures. So, show your school pride and make a positive impact that may last a lifetime!
