Weekly News Update
August 18, 2006

Dear Friends of Reading to Kids,

On August 12, we welcomed 674 children and 212 volunteers for our reading clubs.  That is an increase of 200 students from last month! Thanks to all of the volunteers who worked so hard to make this a successful morning, and thanks to teachers and administrators for helping to recruit your students!

Thanks also to El Cholo Cafe for increasing the number of appetizer platters they donate to volunteers after the reading clubs from 8 to 12!  And thanks to Naked Juice for donating juice for breakfast at all four schools!

PETER AND THE WOLF AT THE SEPTEMBER READING CLUBS

In September, members of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra will be performing "Peter and the Wolf" at the Esperanza Reading Clubs. The Orchestra approached Esperanza as part of their Community Outreach Program, and we were happy to have them play for our "Fantasy, Folklore, and Fairy Tales" reading clubs!

We are also arranging to bring musicians to Gratts, Hoover, and Magnolia to put on similar performances. The music will be performed by a woodwind quintet (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, French Horn), piano, and narrator.  The performances will happen during craft time, from 11:00 - 11:45 a.m.  To compliment the performance, 3rd Grade students will be reading Peter and the Wolf by Vladimir Vagin!

We anticipate a high turnout at our September reading clubs for this special event, and we hope that you will join us as well!  Click here to sign up!

 NOBLE READING CLUBS

The Tzu Chi Foundation will be hosting reading clubs at Noble Elementary on Saturday, August 26th.  The format is similar to that of Reading to Kids, and it takes place on the fourth Saturday of each month; they would love to have you volunteer!

If you are interested in volunteering, or for more information, please contact Lilian Fanchiang at everybodyreadsyahoo.com

CLASSROOM HELPERS

Reading to Kids has been offering the teacher from each school who recruits the most students to our reading clubs a "Classroom Helper."

For the winners of the July reading clubs, Reading to Kids interns went to the schools to serve as classroom helpers for a day. They read stories, graded papers, prepped assignments, and helped out with many other classroom tasks.

If you are interested in serving as a classroom helper for a day or part of a day, please e-mail Sarah.Koltermanreadingtokids.org

THANK YOU TOYOTA MOTOR SALES, U.S.A., INC!

On Thursday, August 10th, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.  held a "Back to School" lunch fundraiser benefiting Reading to Kids. All attendees brought either a book donation or a small check for Reading to Kids, and in return ate a delicious lunch, won fun raffle prizes, and participated in a Spelling Bee and a game of Jeopardy!

Reading to Kids received 330 books, $1,560 from 75 individual contributions, and a $5,000 check from Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. We also hope to have recruited a few new volunteers!
