Weekly News Update
December 21, 2004

Dear R2K Volunteers and Friends,

If you noticed that the December Reading Clubs seemed busier than usual, it's for a good reason: we welcomed 1,097 kids and 279 volunteers on the 11th, breaking our previous records for both kids and volunteers. We nearly doubled last year's December attendance of 613 kids! The list of volunteers who participated on the 11th will be posted soon here.

(Sign up now for next month's January 8th Reading Clubs by clicking here! -- let's kick off 2005 with a bang!)

The attendance records prompt special congratulations for our amazing Taskforce of volunteers, who plan and execute the majority of our activities. If you've volunteered at least twice and you think you'd like to get more involved with the administrative side of Reading to Kids, please click here to learn more about the Taskforce.

Make R2K Your New Year's Resolution!

If you've enjoyed participating with R2K in the past, resolve to make 2005 your year of community involvement: join us each month at the Reading Clubs! 2005 is sure to be another year of growth for this great grassroots cause, and we'd love to have your support.

Returning volunteers are Reading to Kids' greatest asset since they offer stability and experience and can give guidance to new volunteers. We can be sure the Reading Clubs run efficiently when we've got lots of returning volunteers on board. Please try to join us as often as you can in 2005!

Our Great Supporters!

The Holiday season at Reading to Kids has brought a lot of great donations our way from generous supporters in the community. Hundreds of volunteers donated prizes for the December 11th Reading Clubs, and all those prizes made their way into the homes of our participating kids. Thanks to our four volunteer Santas, Dave McKibben, Michael Wallden, David Victorin, and Kermit Henderson -- you guys were great!

And, just as they do every month, El Cholo Restaurant donated 8 fiesta platters to hungry volunteers after the Reading Clubs, and Wild Oats Market donated $50 worth of supplies for the Reading Club Breakfasts. Our partners at Peet's Coffee and Starbucks also supplied coffee for volunteers.

Special thanks are due to new R2K partner Trader Joe's in Pasadena. The store on Arroyo Parkway generously donated $100 worth of food for a Taskforce Holiday Meeting held on the 19th. Many thanks.

Best wishes for a great holiday for those who are celebrating this weekend and for a lovely few days off!
