Dear R2K Gang:

I know many of you are gearing up for a fun Saturday of Halloweeny fun at the October 9th Reading Clubs -- get ready for some spooky and goofy stories! Make sure to reserve yourself a spot and click here to volunteer on the second Saturday in October!

Literacy in Los Angeles

On September 8th, UN International Literacy Day, the Los Angeles Literacy@Work partnership released a study highlighting literacy in our fair city. Here are some incredible -- and troubling -- statistics from that report:

*The City of Los Angeles has the highest rate of undereducated adults of any major city in the U.S.
*3.8 million people -- or 53% of Los Angeles County's working-age population -- have low or no literacy skills.
*Thirty-one percent of the working-age population has limited English skills, including 360,000 who reported speaking English "not at all." (But, the study discovered, virtually all jobs that pay above poverty-level wages require English skills.)

For over half the adults in Los Angeles County, the hardest part about getting a job isn't the interview ... it's the application. To access the report, please click here.

How You Can Make a Difference!

Without English literacy skills, individuals in Los Angeles -- particularly those in low-income communities like the ones we serve -- have little opportunity for social and economic mobility.

The mission of Reading to Kids is to inspire underserved children with a love of reading, thereby enriching their lives and opportunities for success in the future. Your participation with us helps to raise literacy levels in the communities we serve. You are invested in the future of this city's children and you make it happen!

You are so valuable to us as volunteers, and we would be honored to count you among our donors as well. Please consider participating in our Annual Fund Drive and helping this organization grow by clicking here.

Please join me in donating to the 2004 Annual Fund Drive!

Best,
