Reading to Kids Celebrates 15th Anniversary with Comedy Night and Silent Auction

DOMA Theatre Company Sponsors Local Grassroots Organization's Event as it Donates 125,000th Book to LAUSD Elementary Students

TUESDAY, April 29, 2014 – Hollywood, Calif. – When the Reading to Kids community walks into the Hollywood Improv on April 29, they will be in for a night filled with celebration and hilarious talent all for a fantastic cause. With sponsorship by DOMA Theatre Company, this year's Reading to Kids' annual Comedy Night and Silent Auction is hosted by Patrick Keane. The event also marks the 15th anniversary of Reading to Kids and the organization’s donation of the 125,000th paperback book to LAUSD school children.

"This is such an important milestone - for us, for the kids who show up for the reading clubs, and for the schools that welcome us every month," said Charlie Orchard, Managing Director of Reading to Kids. "A staggering number of kids in the Los Angeles area don't have age-appropriate books in their homes. That makes it even more important that they have access to these books at school, where hundreds of children can enjoy each book. And what better way to highlight this 15 year anniversary than with a night of comedy and celebration?"

On the second Saturday of each month, Reading to Kids holds reading clubs at seven LAUSD elementary schools to bring volunteers and students together to instill a love of reading, thereby enriching their lives and opportunities for future success. A key element of this partnership is the donation of hardcover books after they have been read to the children- with audiences ranging from kindergarten through fifth grade - to the school libraries. By giving each school copies of the read aloud books, the students can access them any time - particularly the fourth and fifth graders, who are introduced to the first few chapters of their books during the reading clubs and then have the opportunity to check the books out from their libraries so they can finish them later. The children who attend the monthly reading clubs are also given their own paperback prize book to take home to build their personal libraries.

Proceeds from the event will support Reading to Kids monthly reading club program. Kids leave the reading clubs with more enthusiasm for reading, books for their home libraries, and stronger school libraries.

"DOMA Theatre Company is proud to be the Title Sponsor for this year's Reading to Kids Comedy Night & Silent Auction," said Mike Abramson, Director of Marketing at DOMA Theatre Company. "As a non-profit theatre organization dedicated to the preservation of musical theatre and the arts, DOMA Theatre Co recognizes the importance literacy plays in preserving, creating, promoting and augmenting the arts. By participating in reading programs, students strengthen the future of the arts for generations to come."

The event will start with a silent auction followed by a comedy show hosted by Patrick Keane and featuring comedians hand-picked by the world famous Hollywood Improv, including Fred Stoller, Dwayne Perkins, Jason Collings, Matt Kirshen, and Flip Schultz.
