Synopsis: Every day, in a house by the sea, a little boy watches his father leave for a long day's work. One night, a great storm washes a small whale onto the beach. The boy discovers the whale is a good listener. The father discovers the boy is lonely. Together, they return the whale to the sea. And from that day on, the boy learns that the father can be a good listener too

Discussion topics for before reading:
•  Where do you think they are going on the boat?
•  What do you think it's like being on the boat while it is raining?

Vocabulary:

•  Rage - To act or speak using fury

Discussion topics for during/after reading:
•  How would you save the whale on the beach?
•  How do you think Noi's Dad will react to seeing the whale in the bathtub?
•  Would you want to keep the whale? Why or why not?

Craft ideas:
•  Make a puppet of the whale using a sock.
•  Draw the sea.

Special activities:
•  The children can discuss what it's like to live near the beach.
