Synopsis: "Inspired by the many Indigenous-led movements across North America, We Are Water Protectors issues an urgent rallying cry to safeguard the Earth’s water from harm and corruption―a bold and lyrical picture book."

Water is the first medicine.
It affects and connects us all . . .

When a black snake threatens to destroy the Earth
And poison her people’s water, one young water protector
Takes a stand to defend Earth’s most sacred resource.

Discussion topics for before reading:
•  What is a water protector?
•  How can we all be water protectors?
•  Who is on the cover of the book? What are they holding?

Vocabulary:

•  Nourish - Supply with food needed for life and growth.
•  Foretold - To tell of as likely to happen in the future.
•  Venom - The poison that certain snakes, insects, and other animals produce.
•  Steward - One who manages or supervises money belonging to another or others.

Discussion topics for during/after reading:
•  How would you stop the black snake from destroying the land?
•  Now that the snake is there, what do you think is going to happen to the water?
•  How would you prevent the black snake from coming back?
•  Why is it important to have clean water?

Craft ideas:
•  Normally at the November reading clubs we give an item with a college logo to each kid. This November have the kids create their own college logos based on the college logo you volunteer(s) share on something you are wearing or otherwise display on Zoom.
•  Draw before and after picture. The before can be what the water looked like when it was dirty, and the children can draw what clean water looks like.
•  Draw what the village looks like on the whiteboard.
•  Check our craft ideas on Pinterest!

Special activities:
•  Discuss ideas about how we can all help the environment stay clean.

*Note: These craft ideas are just suggestions. You can use them, but you don't have to use them. You can expand upon them, or add your own twist. Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
