Synopsis: What’s brewing when two favorites—poetry and fairy tales—are turned (literally) on their heads? It’s a revolutionary recipe: an infectious new genre of poetry and a lovably modern take on classic stories. This ingenious book of reversos, or poems which have one meaning when read down the page and perhaps an altogether different meaning when read up the page, toys with and reinvents oh-so-familiar stories and characters, from Cinderella to the Ugly Duckling.

Note to readers:
•  A principal told us the kids would delight in a sock puppet doing some of the reading!
•  The PDF for your book does NOT include page numbers on the pages themselves. Instead you can see the page number of the PDF in the upper left of the free Adobe Acrobat software.

Discussion topics for before reading:
•  Who is looking in the mirror on the cover?

Vocabulary

•  poem - Poetry is a type of literature, or artistic writing, that attempts to stir a reader's imagination or emotions. The poet does this by carefully choosing and arranging language for its meaning, sound, and rhythm. Some poems, such as nursery rhymes, are simple and humorous.
•  briar - prickly, thorny shrub.
•  dawdle - waste time; be slow.

Discussion topics for during/after reading:
•  Does the meaning change when read backwards? Does it make the meaning different or opposite?
•  Which order do you think is more interesting? Forwards or backwards?
•  Vote on your favorite fairy tale.

Craft ideas:
•  Write your own "reverso" (or use the short one in the back, "A cat without a chair: Incomplete." vs "Incomplete: A chair without a cat."). Fold a piece of paper in half, and write one part down one side, and write it the reverse "up" on the other side.
•  Write a few palindromes (word or sentence that reads the same forwards and backwards) on a piece of paper, e.g. level, kayak, civic, noon, wow, mom.

•  Make a card for Mother's Day (tomorrow, May 10)! Fold a piece of colored or white paper in half. Draw a picture, like a flower or bouquet of flowers on the front or inside.

Special activities:
•  Other palindromes:
•  STEP ON NO PETS
•  NEVER ODD OR EVEN
•  NOW I WON
•  TACO CAT

*Note: These craft ideas are just suggestions. You can use them, but you don't have to use them. You can expand upon them, or add your own twist. Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
