•  When is your birthday? What do you do for your birthday?
•  Do you like birthday parties? What do you like to do at birthday parties?
•  What kinds of presents do you like to get for your birthday?
•  What kinds of presents do you like to give your friends?
•  Do you like bugs? Insects? What kinds do you like?

Discussion topics for during/after reading:
•  What would it be like to receive a birthday bug in your birthday box?
•  Have you ever gift-wrapped a present for someone?
•  Do you like the bright birthday boxes in this story? What kinds of paper wrap do you like?
•  Why would birthday bugs be a good present?

Craft ideas:
•  Make your own party hat, and don?t forget the Party Bug on it!
•  Draw a picture of a birthday box with colorful paper wrap and bow. Don?t forget the birthday cake with candles (number of candles equals your age!).
•  Make a birthday card for someone you know. Decorate it with bugs.
•  Draw a picture of a bug in a box.

Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
