Synopsis: This lyrical ode to loving who you are, respecting others, and being kind to one another comes from Empire actor and activist Grace Byers and artist Keturah A. Bobo.

We are all here for a purpose. We are more than enough. We just need to believe it.

Discussion topics for before reading:
•  What are your favorite activities? Do you like to ride your bicycle? Dance? or Sing?
•  Who is your friend that you share these activities with on the weekends? After school?
•  What activities would you like to learn? Roller skating? Ice skating? Flying a kite?

Vocabulary
•  Bird: an animal with two wings, two feet, and a body covered with feathers. Most birds can fly.
•  Sun: The Sun is the star in the center of our solar system. It is a yellow dwarf star. It gives off energy as light. That includes light, infra-red energy (heat), ultraviolet light and radio waves
•  Tree: Trees are tall, woody plants. They usually have a stem called a trunk. Trees are some of the largest and oldest living things on Earth.
•  Mountain: A mountain is a landform that rises high above its surroundings. Taller than a hill, it usually has steep slopes and a rounded or sharp peak.
•  Heart: The Heart is a muscular organ that is a part of the blood circulatory system. It pumps blood through blood vessels to every part of the body.

Discussion topics for during/after reading:
•  What are some activities the children enjoy in this story?
•  Do we look the same?
•  How do we treat people that look different from us?
•  When things get tough for our friend, what should we do?
•  What do we say together?

Craft ideas:
•  1) Easy: Like the sun: Student’s will draw a sun on construction paper and share on each ray of the sun what makes them special, and describe themselves using five adjectives. Adjectives such as Funny, cheery, athletic, creative, kind. Materials needed: Construction paper, slim markers, crayons, stencil, and scissors.
•  2) Easy: Favorite Scene: Have your students draw their favorite scene or message from the book. Materials needed: Construction paper, slim markers, crayons, stencil, and scissors.

*Note: These craft ideas are just suggestions. You can use them, but you don't have to use them. You can expand upon them, or add your own twist. Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
