Synopsis: You can learn a lot about life by observing another species. That's what Humphrey was told when he was first brought to Room 26. And boy is it true! There are always adventures in the classroom and each weekend he gets to sleep over with different students. Humphrey learns to read, write, shoot rubber bands (only in self-defense, of course), turn off TVs, teach English as a second language, and more. With a lock-that-doesn't-lock and an adventurous spirit, what more could a mischievous hamster want?

Discussion topics for before reading:
•  Who is Humphrey? What do you think they have to say about the world?

Vocabulary
•  Nocturnal (adjective) active at night.
•  Consult (verb) to seek advice or information.
•  Moonlighted (verb) to work an extra job.
•  Assured (adjective) confident.
•  Skittering (verb) move lightly and quickly.

Discussion topics for during/after reading:
•  What can people learn from taking care of pets? How does having a pet make you a better human?
•  Does Humphrey like his alone time? How does he feel about the dark?
•  What does Humphrey think of the new teacher? Was he correct to feel this way? How did he feel about her at the end? Have you ever had a similar experience in your life?
•  How does hamsters speak? Have you ever heard it?
•  Do you find the tips at the end of each chapter useful? What about Humphrey's guide at the end of this book?

Craft ideas:
•  Construct or draw your favorite pet, hamster, dog or one you invent.
•  Construct Humphrey’s cage. Don’t forget the wheel!
•  Make a fun obstacle course complete with ramps and challenges for Humphrey along the way.

*Note: These craft ideas are just suggestions. You can use them, but you don't have to use them. You can expand upon them, or add your own twist. Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
