Synopsis: As trees sway in the cool breeze, blue jays head south, and leaves change their colors, everyone knows - autumn is on its way!

Join a young girl as she takes a walk through forest and town, greeting all the signs of the coming season. In a series of conversations with every flower and creature and gust of wind, she says good-bye to summer and welcomes autumn.

Note to readers:
•  Beautifully illustrated, so please enjoy the vibrant colors!

Discussion topics for before reading:
•  What will miss about summer?
•  What’s your favorite season? Summer? Winter, spring or fall?
•  How does the cover art make you feel? Chilly or warm and cozy?

Vocabulary
•  Rumble-a continuous deep sound, like thunder.
•  Antique-an object having a high value because of considerable age.
•  Asters-a plant of the daisy family that has bright rayed flowers, typically purple or pink. (Note: picture in book)

Discussion topics for during/after reading:
•  Have you noticed leaves falling off trees this week?
•  Why do some animals travel south in the winter?
•  What are some activities that you usually only do in the summer? (going to the beach, swimming pool, wearing shorts) What are some activated that you usually only do in autumn? (choosing and decorating a pumpkin, wearing sweater)

Craft ideas:
•  Create an autumn tree using a paper plate. Use brown construction paper for your trunk and branches. Cut out different colors of leaves and layer on the branches.
•  Draw four trees on one piece of paper, show what each tree looks like in each of the seasons.
•  November is also reading to Kids College Spirit month! Have the kids create their own college logos based on the college logo you volunteer(s) share on something you are wearing. They can even create their own imaginary college logo!

Special activities:
•  Create a picture of your perfect autumn day!

*Note: These craft ideas are just suggestions. You can use them, but you don't have to use them. You can expand upon them, or add your own twist. Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
