Synopsis: Meet Abbie Wu. Abbie is in crisis - and not just because she's starting middle school or because she's stuck in a family that doesn't quite get her or because everyone seems to have a Thing except her. Abbie Wu is always in crisis.

From author and professional doodler Booki Vivat, Frazzled dives right into the mind of this hilariously neurotic middle school girl as she tries to figure out who she is and where she belongs.

Note to readers:
•  The new school year is scheduled to begin next week. You will probably have a mix of kids in your group. They should be incoming 5th graders. However, there may be some incoming 6th graders (5th graders last year) and possibly even a 7th grader. It’s OK. It happens every year. Quiz the kids about what grade they will be in. If there are any “older” kids, ask them how they feel about middle school? What subjects do they like or not like? Then read the synopsis above.

Discussion topics for before reading:
•  See Note to Readers, above. Have a conversation about back to school!

Vocabulary
•  frazzled: state of extreme physical or nervous fatigue or agitation.
•  impending: occurring or likely to occur; upcoming
•  guarantee: assurance of the fulling of a condition.
•  doom: an unhappy destiny or outcome.
•  elective: permitting a choice to be made by an individual; in case, selecting a class from a list of possibilities.

Discussion topics for during/after reading:
•  Do you have siblings? How old are they? What gender are they? What is your position in the family (oldest, youngest, in the middle)?
•  What is your favorite subject in school? What is your least? What other school activities do you participate in?
•  If you could pick an elective now (as a 5th grader), what would it be?

Craft ideas:
•  Draw a picture of something you did this summer. Family trip, camping, beach, amusement park, etc.
•  In anticipation of your possible Language Arts assignment, write a paragraph, “What I did this summer”.
•  Draw a picture of your family. Include your siblings in order to show your different ages. Don’t forget your pets.

Special activities:
•  Do the word search

*Note: These craft ideas are just suggestions. You can use them, but you don't have to use them. You can expand upon them, or add your own twist. Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
