Synopsis: Water Buffalo and Crane's field is dry, empty, and hot - so hot that they can barely think of anything else. Every day is the same . . .

Until one day, they hear something new.

"How do you do?"

When Goat dances into their lives, Water Buffalo and Crane can't help but join in. Suddenly their field doesn't seem dry, empty, and hot at all. Even after Goat dances away, their world is no longer so small.

Discussion topics for before reading:
•  What do you think the animals on the cover are doing? (flying, dancing, floating?)
•  Any ideas what the story is about?
•  When you speak to your friends do you say, “How do you do?”

Vocabulary
•  Unexpected- not expected; surprising.
•  Inventing-create, design, or make up.
•  Shimmy- an American ragtime dance marked by shaking of the hips and shoulders.

Discussion topics for during/after reading:
•  Do you like it better when it is hot outside or when it is raining?
•  Do you like to dance with your friends? If not
•  What do you like to do with your friends?
•  Do you enjoy meeting new friends?

Craft ideas:
•  Draw a picture of your perfect day.
•  Create a sun with a folded paper plate. Draw a picture of you and your friends on it.
•  Create a butterfly using a piece of paper folded in half. Once cut and flattened, color, add googly eyes and do not forget the antennas!

*Note: These craft ideas are just suggestions. You can use them, but you don't have to use them. You can expand upon them, or add your own twist. Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
