Synopsis: Because of an acorn, a tree grows, a bird nests, a seed becomes a flower. Enchanting die cuts illustrate the vital connections between the layers of an ecosystem in this magical book. Wander down the forest path to learn how every tree, flower, plant, and animal connect to one another in spiraling circles of life. An acorn is just the beginning.

Note to readers:
•  This is a short book. I would recommend doing a read through first and talk about the illustrations.

Discussion topics for before reading:
•  What do you think happens because of an acorn?
•  Where can we find acorns?

Vocabulary:

•  Hawk - a bird with a short hooked beak and a curved claws.

Discussion topics for during/after reading:
•  How are the tree and the acorn connected?
•  What other animals do we see in the forest?
•  What can you do to help the environment?

Craft ideas:
•  The children can make acorns out of construction paper.
•  The children could decorate acorns using crayons and strings.
•  For illustrated directions on how to draw and decorate a turkey, see http://readingtokids.org/News/how_to_draw_a_turkey.pdf
•  November is also reading to Kids College Spirit month! Have the kids create their own college logos based on the college logo you volunteer(s) share on something you are wearing. They can even create their own imaginary college logo!

Special activities:
•  Volunteers - bring an acorn!! The children could feel acorns and talk about what it is like to hold an acorn.

*Note: These craft ideas are just suggestions. You can use them, but you don't have to use them. You can expand upon them, or add your own twist. Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
