Synopsis: Although Bunnybear was born a bear, he feels more like a bunny. He prefers bouncing in the thicket to tramping in the forest, and in his heart he's fluffy and tiny, like a rabbit, instead of burly and loud, like a bear. The other bears don't understand him, and neither do the bunnies. Will Bunnybear ever find a friend who likes him just the way he is?

Note to readers:
•  The author is an Reading To Kids volunteer and 2nd Grade Level Coordinator at Politi Elementary
•  During the read aloud, it's fun to have the kids act out the bear roars, bunny whispers, bunny giggles, and hugs.

Discussion topics for before reading:
•  Looking at the cover, what do you think this book is about?
•  Have you ever tried to make friends with a new group of people? What happened?
•  Have you ever had a friend who made you feel really happy when you were with them?

Vocabulary:

•  burly -- big and strong
•  den -- a home for bears, often in caves or trees
•  ferocious -- powerful and scary
•  warren -- an underground home for rabbits

Discussion topics for during/after reading:
•  Near the end of the story, why do you think Mama Bear roared at Bunnybear?
•  Have you ever felt one way on the outside and another way on the inside?
•  If you could throw a big party and invite your family and friends, what would it be like? Would there be music or games? What would you eat and drink?

Craft ideas:
•  Check our craft ideas on Pinterest!
https://www.pinterest.com/readingtokids/june-2023-friendship-fun/
•  Make a drawing of a bear. Then flip it and draw a bunny on the other side (see Pinterest link above)
•  Make a card or drawing for a friend or family member who makes you happy
•  Make a card for Father's Day

Special activities:
•  Watch and share with the kids the video that Bunnybear author Andrea J. Loney made for Reading to Kids! (48 seconds) https://youtu.be/Jyx7V6rdNB8
•  Play "Bunny Bunny Bear" -- it's like Duck Duck Goose but with bunnies and bears, and when the "Bear" is tagged, that person roars like a bear and chases the tagger around the circle. The tagger hops around the circle like a bunny until they make it back to their seat, and now the Bear becomes the new tagger.

*Note: These craft ideas are just suggestions. You can use them, but you don't have to use them. You can expand upon them, or add your own twist. Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
