Synopsis: Animals and multiethnic children illustrate various body movements on large, double-page spreads. A giraffe bends its neck, a monkey waves its arms, etc. The repetitive text has the animal stating the movement and asking, "Can you do it?" Each child responds, "I can do it!" Carle's vivid cut-paper collages are striking and invite sharing individually or with a group.

Note to readers:
•  This book is short, but very interactive. You can have the kids stand & repeat each movement as you read. Also, you can read the book more than once, even after you finish the crafts.

Discussion topics for before reading:
•  What is the animal on the front cover?
•  What is he doing?

Discussion topics for during/after reading:
•  What other things do animals do? Run? Walk?
•  What other animal movements can you do?
•  What is the parrot on the last page doing?
•  Which is your favorite animal from this book?
•  Is it fun to move just like animals?

Craft ideas:
•  Choose an animal from the book & make a paper bag or craft stick puppet.
•  Make a drawing of your favorite animal on one side of the page & yourself making the same movements.

Special activities:
•  Read the book again & have the kids act out the movements with their puppets.

*Note: These craft ideas are just suggestions. You can use them, but you don't have to use them. You can expand upon them, or add your own twist. Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
