Synopsis: Set in picturesque Paris, this tale of a brave little girl's trip to the hospital is as appealing today as it was in 1940. The combination of spirited heroine, timelessly appealing art, cheerful humor, and rhythmic text makes "Madeline" a perennial favorite with children of all ages.

Discussion topics for before reading:
•  Who is Madeline?
•  Where is she?
•  Do you know what city she lives in? (during set up time, look at the last page of the book to identify the Paris sights with the students)
•  Do you wear a uniform to school? How is hers different?

Discussion topics for during/after reading:
•  *DURING*:
•  Why is the teacher dressed that way?
•  What does breaking bread mean?
•  Would you go to school in the snow?
•  Have you ever had to the hospital?
•  What’s the crank for?
•  Do you see designs in your ceiling?

Craft ideas:
•  Draw a picture of your school and sights in your city that would tell the world that you’re in Los Angeles. (Beach, Hollywood sign, La Brea Tar Pits, Downtown Buildings), Chinatown, Olvera Street.)

*Note: These craft ideas are just suggestions. You can use them, but you don't have to use them. You can expand upon them, or add your own twist. Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
