Dear Friends of Reading to Kids,

Last Saturday's reading clubs were full of arts and entertainment! 175 volunteers read to 375 students, with the help of 27 teachers and staff and 68 parents also in attendance.

Many of the kids were also delighted with the movie posters, prizes, and refurbished computers we gave away!

The kids are now officially back in school, so the September Reading Clubs are going to be HUGE!

SEPTEMBER 13TH READING CLUBS

Please be sure to sign up for the next reading clubs!   Click here to submit your RSVP for our "Back to School Fun" reading clubs on September 13th.

We will need hundreds of volunteers for our September reading clubs, so please tell everyone you know about your favorite volunteer opportunity!  Here are three easy ways to do that:

  • "Join" our Facebook event to let your friends know you're reading with us on Sept. 13th!

  • Use our super-handy email template (in PDF) to encourage people you know to sign up to read with us!

  • Print out this flyer and post it somewhere others will see it. Make it a personal and fun social event by including the school at which you'll be reading!

SCHOOL AMBASSADORS NEEDED

The 2014-15 school year started this week, so from now through Sept. 19th we'll have more than a dozen opportunities to publicize Reading to Kids at our partner schools.   To do that, we need your help as a Reading to Kids Ambassador.

There are three different ways you can help out: Kindergarten Orientations, Teacher Breakfast Deliveries, and Back-to-School-Nights.

We'll supply everything you need, including what to say at the Kindergarten Orientations. Although it's great if you can speak Spanish (even a little), all of our parent materials are bilingual, and there's always someone who can translate for you at the school.

These events set the course for the rest of the year and are a wonderful way to interact with the kids and their parents, as well as to honor the teachers. The more we publicize at the beginning of the school year, the more children and families we'll serve all year.

Please email us at inforeadingtokids.org or call the office at (310) 479-7455 if you want to know more about being an Ambassador and the schedule of events.

MAGICIANS NEEDED

If you or someone you know possesses the powers of magic and illusion, please contact us. We are looking for magicians to perform at each of our seven schools at our October 11th reading clubs!

THANK YOU TO OUR SUMMER INTERNS!

Did you know that much of the smooth-running logistics of our events and monthly reading clubs is made possible by a small, dedicated group of office interns?

If you have ever been impressed with how professional our materials and organizational techniques were over the past three months, you can thank our two fabulous summer interns, Mildred Rodriguez and Kristin Jongkobkeait. They volunteered many hours of their summer vacation in the Reading to Kids offices!

We could not have put on such enjoyable summer reading clubs without their sunny personalities and creative work, and we wish them all the best as they head back to the "real world"!

Thanks, and we hope all of the teachers out there are having a great first week of school!

Sincerely,

Charlie Orchard and Hannah Edwards
