November 15, 2012

Dear Friends of Reading to Kids,

Everybody won at our "Sports, Fun, and Games" reading clubs, with 959 kids, 410 volunteers, 129 parents, and 23 teachers and staff in attendance. Thank you to all of our volunteers who showed their college pride on Saturday! Your participation in our College Spirit Day inspires students to pursue their higher education goals.

We also want to thank those of you who donated college giveaway items. Whether you gave notebooks, pens, stickers, or pompoms, these items put smiles on students' faces and got them thinking about their academic dreams.

We are sure you are all wondering which college had the most spirit! Volunteers from over 60 colleges and universities participated in November's College Spirit Day! The numbers have been tallied and (drum roll please), here are the results:

Local: 1st place: UCLA (42 volunteers); 2nd place: USC (27 volunteers); 3rd place: CSU Long Beach (17 volunteers)
California (non-local): 1st place: Stanford (18 volunteers)
Out of State: 1st place: University of Illinois (5 volunteers)

Thank you all for showing your school spirit on Saturday and most importantly, for encouraging hundreds of elementary school children to go to college one day!

SANTA CLAUS(ES) NEEDED!

We are on the lookout for volunteers to dress up as Mr. Kringle or one of his helpful elves. As many of you know, we will be having a very special visitor at our December 8th Reading Clubs. That's right, Santa Claus is coming to town!

The Santa suits will once again be generously provided by the Pasadena Jaycee's Operation Santa. If you are interested in volunteering for this wonderful project, please click here to read more about it.

Please contact us if you are interested in spreading some holiday cheer on December 8th. There's nothing better than seeing the students' excitement when Santa visits our reading clubs, and we can't make this happen without your support.

2012 ANNUAL FUND DRIVE UPDATE: SCHOOL COMPETITION WINNERS; SUPPORT OUR CAUSE!

At the November 10th Reading Clubs we continued the 2012 Annual Fund Drive, and thanks to many generous volunteer readers that morning, we more than doubled the number of donations we received at the October 13th Reading Clubs!

The school that had the largest percentage of their volunteers donate at this past Saturday's clubs was Magnolia Elementary! Congratulations also go out to Charles White Elementary for coming in a close second place in November, and for having the overall largest percentage of their volunteers donate at both the October 13th and November 10th Reading Clubs!

In addition to donating directly through our 2012 Annual Fund Drive page, we now also have our own Causes Action! Please visit our Causes Action and promote it to your friends, family and co-workers so they, too, can support the Reading to Kids journey!
