Program Coordinator Position Available
June 30, 2008
Dear Friends of Reading to Kids,

After two years of wonderful service to Reading to Kids, our current Program Coordinator, Sarah Kolterman, has decided to step down from her position in September 2008 to pursue other opportunities with a desired goal of eventually getting into teaching.  But for those of us who are big fans of Sarah, she'll still be around Reading to Kids.  As she put it, "It's not like you're losing a Program Coordinator; you're gaining a volunteer!"  :-)  We're going to plan an event later this summer to thank Sarah for all she's done for the program.

If you are interested in working at Reading to Kids, or you know someone who might be interested in applying for the open position, please read on to review our job posting:

Reading to Kids is seeking a full-time Program Coordinator to work under the direction of our Program Director. As one of two paid employees of the agency, the Program Coordinator will have an exceptional opportunity to work with a grassroots nonprofit organization.

This individual must be able to embody the organization’s mission, inspire others to become involved, and serve as a point person for thousands of volunteers and community members. This position offers the opportunity to help direct the growth of Reading to Kids and to bring the joy of reading to many more children in Los Angeles.

The Program Coordinator serves in a variety of capacities, including but not limited to the following:

School Relations

Working with our current schools to coordinate each month’s reading clubs; reaching out to potential partner schools.

Volunteer Coordination

Volunteer recruitment, maintaining relationships with volunteer groups, and ensuring and improving the quality of the Reading to Kids volunteer experience.

Community Outreach

Public representation of Reading to Kids at fairs, school events, and meetings.  Outreach to community organizations, individuals, and businesses.

Development and Fundraising

Assisting with fundraising events; outreach to local businesses for in-kind donations; assisting with grantwriting.

Board/Taskforce Relations

Participation in Board and Taskforce meetings and involvement with Taskforce committees as a facilitator and coordinator.

Administration

Data recording and analysis post-reading clubs. Ordering, inventory, and distribution of prize books.

Qualifications for the position should include a minimum of a B.A./B.S. degree with experience in volunteer management and program coordination. An ideal candidate will have outstanding written and oral communication skills, exceptional people skills, a keen attention to detail, an energetic personality, an enthusiasm for the benefits that our program offers, and a genuine motivation to work toward providing children with an enthusiasm for reading.

Starting salary will be between $30,000 and $35,000 plus benefits. The tentative starting date of the position is September 1, 2008.

If you are interested in applying for the position, please e-mail your cover letter and resume as a Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat PDF attachment to hiring@readingtokids.org. The cover letter and resume should be in one document. Please name the document as follows: "Last Name, First Name" (Doe, John).

Questions can be addressed to Jessica.Tritsch@readingtokids.org. Cover letters and resumes will not be accepted by mail or facsimile, or in any format other than as a Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat attachment.
