February Clubs Were a Hit...March Clubs Are Coming Up!

Our February Reading Clubs had more volunteers -- 289 -- than we've ever welcomed before! Thanks in large part to old and new friends like UCLA's Bruin Belles and Bruincorps, USC's Alpha Phi Omega and Alpha Kappa Alpha, and the Stanford Alumni group, we filled up early with RSVPs and had a full house on February 12th! We had 688 kids in attendance, all of whom enjoyed a great selection of "friendship"-themed stories for Valentine's Day.

Join us on March 12th for the next Reading Clubs. Spots are filling up fast, so please RSVP early! You can RSVP by clicking here

Read Across America!

Each year, schools across the country welcome volunteers and community leaders to their campuses for Read Across America Day, a celebration of literacy sponsored by the National Education Association (NEA) in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday.

To find out more about Read Across America please click here to visit the NEA's website. Usually, volunteers spend an hour or two at a participating school reading aloud to one or more classrooms of kids. Last year, Read Across America Day was a big hit with R2K fans, some of whom brought their own favorite books to the schools to read!

This year, two of our schools -- Magnolia and Esperanza -- are holding Read Across America events. Esperanza's event will be on March 2nd from 8:30-11:30 a.m. To sign up to volunteer, please contact Juan Gonzalez at Esperanza at (213) 484-0326.

Magnolia's event will be on March 4th from 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. To sign up please contact Marcela Ramirez at (213) 748-6281.

Volunteering Opportunity!

A Reading to Kids volunteer, Estela Bueno, will be helping to organize the 2005 Los Angeles Regional Science Bowl Competition this Saturday. Volunteers are needed from 12:00-5:00 p.m at LADWP?s John Ferraro Building in Downtown L.A.

Hundreds of students from over 30 LAUSD high schools will be there. To register as a volunteer, contact Estela Bueno, at Estela.Bueno@ladwp.com or at (213) 367-0400. To find out more about the Science bowl go to www.ladwp.com and click on the ?Community and Safety? area.

Hope you can make it to these community events -- thanks for participating!

Thanks!
