Weekly News Update
December 5, 2003

Ho Ho Ho Everybody!

It's (already!) the Holiday season again, and that means one thing at Reading to Kids: the year's most festive clubs! Though the Reading Clubs are a week away, we're rapidly filling up: we've already reached capacity at one school!

In order to ensure yourself a spot, please sign up as soon as possible by  clicking here! Please consider RSVPing to Noble Elementary, our newest school and our only Valley location -- we're only 44% full there, and we'll need plenty of volunteers this month! With many of our enthusiastic college students already on winter break, we'll need your help more than ever!

Remember: these Reading Clubs will feature a volunteer Santa at every school and a much-anticipated raffle. The raffle will include books and other prizes donated by our generous volunteers and a grand prize of one computer per school! If you'd like to share your favorite childhood book with one of our Reading Club participants this month, please bring along an unwrapped, new (or gently used) copy to the school you'll be attending. One wonderful volunteer, Robyn Chew, collected 60 new books for the December clubs!

Further, if you'd like to help out in a BIG way this December 13th, you can offer to be an "elf" this holiday club and aid Santa in giving out prize books to all of our Reading Club attendees and handing out raffle prizes in the auditorium. Please e-mail me at MaryannaAbdo@readingtokids.org if you'd like to help out!

Our Curriculum Committee has been hard at work hatching ideas for "discussion points" volunteers can use before and after the read-aloud. These questions are meant to encourage analysis of the book and critical engagement with the story. An example can be reviewed by clicking here!

More great fundraising news: Reading to Kids received a generous $3,000 grant from the Raytheon Company with the help of Fundraising Committee member Chris Cox, a Raytheon employee. Reading to Kids thanks Chris for all his efforts to facilitate this donation!

Please look for more news early next week as we gear up for our visit from Kris Kringle...

Best Wishes!
