Weekly News Update
May 18, 2004

Hiya!

First things first: please sign up to volunteer with Reading to Kids on June 12th -- just click here! We need over 300 volunteers next month, so be sure to pump up your efforts for our Annual Recruitment Drive! We're asking every active volunteer to recruit at least one friend or family member to participate -- please help us keep our Reading Clubs running smoothly this summer.

(Just ask your new recruits to mention your name when asked on their application - the volunteer who brings in the most new applicants will win an R2K t-shirt and free entry for two to The Highlands Nightclub in Hollywood!)

Reading to Kids Fifth Birthday Bash!

Next Wednesday (yep, just over a week from now!) is Reading to Kids' Fifth Birthday Bash! Act now: we need to get a final, near-accurate count to the restaurant by this Friday, so we'd like to get our RSVP lists finalized! The deadline for advance ticket purchase is Tuesday, May 25th at 5:00 p.m.

And, buying a ticket ahead of time just got easier -- you can use PayPal to purchase tickets online below. Please click here to find out more about the event!

Reading to Kids Hollywood Hike!

This Sunday: it's the Reading To Kids hike to the Hollywood Sign! The Reading to Kids Social Committee invites you to come on out!

TIME: 10:00 am, Sunday May 23rd
HIKE: 1.5 hours
ELEVATION GAIN: 550 feet

Driving Directions: At the intersection of Franklin Ave and Western Ave in Hollywood, drive 0.7 Miles west on Franklin Ave to Beachwood Drive. Turn Right (North) and continue 1.7 Miles up Beachwood Drive to Hollyridge Drive. Park near this intersection. This trail leads to the famous “Hollywood” Sign on the south side of Mount Lee.

L.A. Works Day!

Reading to Kids volunteers will be joining thousands of other Angelenos on June 5th for the 2004 L.A. Works Day! On L.A. Works Day thousands of volunteers representing Los Angeles’ rich, cultural blend join together for a one-day, all-out, community service blitz. One of L.A. Works' projects for the 5th is going to be at Magnolia Elementary School! (For more information on L.A. Works, please click here).

L.A. Works has said that as many as 25 volunteers who register to participate with us will have their $25 registration fee waived! If you can, please still find a sponsor for your activities on L.A. Works Day -- we'd like to show our support for this great organization during their biggest annual fundraiser.

If you'd like to participate, please send me an e-mail at MaryannaAbdo@readingtokids.org with the following (...and remember: the first 25 to register will go for free!):
