Theme of the Month: ENVIRONMENT
What better way to mark the arrival of spring than by teaching kids about the environment? April 22 is the 24th Annual Earth Day, and this month's book selections are a wonderful companion to this important international event.
We're reading Shel Silverstein's classic The Giving Tree in fourth grade, while the first graders are reading a book with some of the loveliest illustrations you'll see: Where the Forest Meets the Sea. For a complete list of these great selections, please click here.
Two Dates to Save!
Remember to mark your calendars for April 28th and May 26th!
On Wednesday, April 28th we'll be meeting at the Westwood Baja Fresh for a Reading to Kids Fundraiser organized by one of our stellar interns, Natalie Liberatore. Next week's Update will include a printable flier that you can bring to the restaurant anytime from 2:00 to 10:00 that day to ensure R2K gets 15% of the food sales!
Further, on Wednesday, May 26th we'll be meeting up at El Cholo Restaurant to celebrate five wonderful years of better readers and happy volunteers -- make sure you plan on attending Reading to Kids' Fifth Birthday Bash! More info to follow next week!
California's Educational Challenges
The efforts of Reading to Kids' volunteers are so important in California because of all the challenges that public education faces in our state. The educators we work with are the hardest-working people I know, and they're up against so many obstacles. Did you know:
* That California has over 8,800 schools in 1,000 districts?
* That California ranks 50th in the nation in librarians, and it would take 4,600 NEW librarians to make us 49th?
* That there are 3 million students who are second language learner in the United States, and that 1.8 million of those are in our fair state?
* That Reading to Kids' schools each have over 1,000 students? (Magnolia and Noble each have almost 2,000!)
Your hard work is SO IMPORTANT to the education of the next generation of Californians. Thanks for all your active citizenship and community involvement!
Yours,
Maryanna Abdo
