Synopsis: In this folktale, help is slow in coming when a Chinese boy falls into a well, since the boy's long and difficult name must be pronounced in full. Beautifully expressive drawings enhance the book's Oriental feel.

Discussion topics for before reading:

  • What is the longest name you have ever heard?
  • What is a folk tale?

Discussion topics for after reading:

  • What does your name mean?
  • Why is it good to have a short name? A long name?
  • When your mother tells you to do something do you always listen? Why not?

Craft ideas:

  • Make a kite like the one the brothers played with in the book.
  • Choose a really long name for yourself, and make a really long nametag. Decorate, and then explain to the group why you chose that name.

Special challenge:

  • Try to fly the kite!

*Note: These craft ideas are just suggestions. You can use them, but you don’t have to use them. You can expand upon them, or add your own twist. Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
