Synopsis: Clement and Hippolyte are handsome, sharp-witted, and as close as brothers. When Clement falls in love with enchanting Pauline, he bids Hippolyte to join his quest to court her, and the two friends set out toward danger and adventure.

Discussion topics:

  • What would you do for a friend?
  • Where is Martinique and the Carribean?
  • Go over the glossary.

Craft ideas:

  • Do black crayon scratch drawings: use paint or crayon in lots of colors to cover a piece of paper, then color over the entire piece of paper with black crayon. When finished, scratch in a drawing which reveals the colors underneath.
  • What was their next adventure? Draw and write about it.

*Note: These craft ideas are just suggestions. You can use them, but you don’t have to use them. You can expand upon them, or add your own twist. Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
