Squanto's Journey

Last updated Tuesday, November 5, 2002

Author: Joseph Bruchac
Illustrator: Greg Shed
Date of Publication: 2000

Grade Level: 5th
Date(s) Used: Nov. 2002

Synopsis: In 1620 an English ship called the Mayflower landed on the shores inhabited by the Pokanoket people, and it was Squanto who welcomed the newcomers and taught them how to survive in the rugged land they called Plymouth.

Craft ideas:

  • Make a chain necklace like Squanto's. On each chain, write what you are thankful for.
  • What would have happened if Samoset and Squanto hadn't tried to make friends with the Pilgrims? Draw/write that story.
  • Make a cornucopia filled with pictures of all that you are thankful for.

*Note: These ideas are just suggestions. You can use them, but you don’t have to use them. You can expand upon them, or add your own twist. Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
