Last updated Wednesday, April 30, 2003

Author: John Steptoe
Illustrator: John Steptoe
Date of Publication: 1987
ISBN: 0688040454
Grade Level: 5th
Date(s) Used: May 2003

Synopsis:This African tale evokes the Cinderella story in its portrayal of two sisters, spiteful Manyara and considerate Nyasha, and the young king who is searching for a bride.

Craft ideas:

  • Make a “beaded” headband or necklace and decorate as in the book.
  • Write a story from your own life with the title, “How I act matters, even when no one else is around.” Illustrate it.
  • Draw/write the story of what happened next with Manyara and Nyasha.

*Note: These craft ideas are just suggestions. You can use them, but you don’t have to use them. You can expand upon them, or add your own twist. Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
