Last updated Thursday, July 3, 2003

Author: Aliki
Illustrator: Aliki
Date of Publication: 1998
ISBN: 0688156614
Grade Level: 5th
Date(s) Used: July 2003

Synopsis: These two carefully written stories, combined in one book, show the difficulties a child faces when coming to a new land and the unique heritage each one of us has.

Craft ideas:

  • Make a post card, with a picture on front, and write a letter from Mari to her friends back home on the other side.
  • What is your favorite family story? Draw a picture that tells that story, and on the back, explain what the story is.
  • Make a family tree.

*Note: These craft ideas are just suggestions. You can use them, but you don’t have to use them. You can expand upon them, or add your own twist. Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
