Synopsis: When a little pig worries about heading off to school for the day, his mother reassures him that her love for him goes everywhere he goes. "I love you all day long," she says. "I love you when you make a new friend.- or when you make a mistake."

Discussion topics for before reading:

  • Do you remember your first day of school? How did it feel?
  • What happens during day at Kindergarten?
  • Do you think about your parents during the school day? Do they think about you?

Discussion topics for after reading:

  • Does Owen have to be good for his mom to love him? How do you know?
  • Why doesn’t Owen want to go to school?

Craft ideas:

  • Make a clock template for the children, and have them decorate it with what happens all day long.
  • Draw a picture of your day at school.
  • Draw you and your mom or dad doing something you love to do.

Special challenge:

  • Call one child up, and secretly show them one page from the book. Have them act out the action on the page, and have the other children guess what action is being demonstrated. The first child with the correct answer is the next to act out a different page.

*Note: These craft ideas are just suggestions. You can use them, but you don’t have to use them. You can expand upon them, or add your own twist. Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
