Synopsis: Once in a while, a perfect union of words and music creates a transcendent song that soars from the heart and speaks to every soul ... Grateful is such an anthem--a loving reminder of the gifts available to us when we approach life with gratitude. It is a song that inspires courage, compassion, and hope.

Discussion topics for before reading:

  • What does it mean to be thankful of someone or something? Give examples.
  • Why do we celebrate Thanksgiving? What did the early settlers have to be thankful for when they settled in America?

Discussion topics for after reading:

  • What are you grateful for? Give examples.
  • How do people express thanks to others?

Craft ideas:

  • Make "hand" turkeys that are as colorful as the pages of the book. On the back of each, write a thank-you note to a parent, teacher, and other people to whom you are grateful.
  • Make a turkey feather headband, and on each feather, write something for which you are grateful.

*Note: These craft ideas are just suggestions. You can use them, but you don’t have to use them. You can expand upon them, or add your own twist. Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
