Date of Publication: 2002
ISBN: 0618238557
Grade Level: 3rd
Date(s) Used: July 2003

Synopsis: "There are many kinds of courage," the narrative begins. "Awesome kinds" appears on a spread of trapeze artists; "everyday kinds" depicts a boy who summons the confidence to jump off a high dive.

Craft ideas:

  • What does courage mean to you? Make a badge, or a charm bracelet of courage with drawings of people facing fears.
  • Make a badge of honor for someone you know who has done something brave. Explain what they did.
  • Who is your favorite courageous hero? Make a picture frame for him/her with drawings about why they are your favorite around the outside.

*Note: These craft ideas are just suggestions. You can use them, but you don’t have to use them. You can expand upon them, or add your own twist. Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
