Synopsis: "Once upon a time there was a sweet little maiden who was loved by all who knew her . . ."So begins this classic tale about Little Red Riding Hood and her encounter with the wolf one day when she is on her way to visit her sick grandmother.

Note to readers:
•  A principal told us the kids would delight in a sock puppet doing some of the reading!

Discussion topics for before reading:
•  This is a classic fairy tale. Has anyone heard this story before?

Vocabulary

•  maiden - a girl or young woman, especially an unmarried one.
•  cloak - an outdoor overgarment, typically sleeveless, that hangs loosely from the shoulders.
•  becoming - flattering a person's appearance. nice-looking
•  loiter - frequent pauses or stops while traveling
•  whither - to what place or state. "Where are you going?"
•  morsel - a small piece or amount of food; a mouthful.
•  cunning - scary and tricky; sneaky
•  solemn - not cheerful or smiling; serious.
•  astonished - very surprised.

Discussion topics for during/after reading:
•  Do you have a favorite item of clothing? Maybe a jacket or t-shirt?
•  Have you ever visited relatives? Did you take any food or gifts?
•  How did the wolf get to grandmother's cottage before Little Red Riding Hood?
•  What did Little Red Riding Hood learn about wandering too long in the forest?

Craft ideas:
•  Make a card for Mother's Day (tomorrow, May 10)! Fold a piece of colored or white paper in half. Draw a flower or bouquet of flowers on the front or inside.
•  Draw a forest with lots of trees. Add a drawing or cut-out of Little Red Riding Hood, and the wolf or grandma.
•  Draw a wolf with big ears, big eyes, and big teeth.
